My dog needs omega 3-6 fatty acid supplements?

by admin on February 26, 2010

I have omega 3 fish oil capsules for high cholesterol for myself. My dog has sensitive skin and coat. His food is perfect but he needs extra. Can I break open one of these capsules for him.

Absolutely! My friends give their black Lab a squirt of fish oil every day on his food. And he’s the softest doggie ever!

Nothing wrong with it. It can raise triglycerides though – so its not for everyone.

Yes, recommended for my 100 lb. Lab was 1000 mg. of Salmon Oil Capsules per day.
For my 12 lb. dog, 1/4 of a broken capsule.

you definetly should give your dog people grade food but to make it cheaper for yourself i suggest going to a health food store and buying non flavored cod liver oil. the capsules are a very expensive way of dosing you and your dog and unlike you your dog probably will like the flavor of the fish oil. Cod liver oil should only be given twice a week because it can become toxic in their system. You can alternate with flax/borage or hemp seed oil if you are worried about toxicity

I give my staffy 2 fish oil capsules everyday and when his coat was dry 4 per day. My vet reccommends giving up to 6 a day depending on dog size and coat condition. I just put the capsule in his food, he loves them. Fish oils contain only omega 3, not 6. Flax oil contains 3 and 6, however omega 6 is in many oils so its best to stick to just fish oils. You need more 3 than 6. Its fantastic for their coats and joints. I also give my dog a cod liver oil (low strength) capsule everyday, it does wonders for sensitive skin.
Good Luck!

Yep those capsules are great. Be sure not to give too many though.

Other options: Salmon Oil, or Vitamin E capsules

Absolutely. I give my dogs the same pills. I buy the fish oil pills from Costco and they Kirkland brand. But it’s also good to give your dog Vitamin "E" along with the fish oil. The vitamin "E" will help the fish oil be more effective.
