Dog Bark Collar
The idea behind a dog bark collar is simple enough. You quite simply fit your dog with a collar that is battery powered which will sense his or her vocal activity. Then, every time your dog barks the device emits a very small electric shock.
Now a lot of people think that this method of bark training is cruel, but the reality is it’s one of the most humane methods available. Quite simply becasue your dog is totally in charge. They will only get the shock if they choose to bark.
So, your dog can avoid the shock by learning not to bark as they go about their normal daily routine.
This is a lot more kindly than smacking your dog, as they have the control and they still maintain respect for you as the alpha dog.
Using a bark collar is very effective with sporting dogs, where you don’t want the dog barking with excitement and disturbing the game.
It will take very few events of the small shock before your dog learns that barking isn’t such a good idea. Your dog is highly intelligent and will learn very quickly to respect his bark collar.
Dog bark collars should not really be used on dogs younger than 6 months old however, as very young animals can react badly to a bark collar.
If you decide to use a bark collar then you must make sure you get one which has adjustable settings for sensitivity. This will allow you to adjust the collar to suit your individual dog. By using the minimum setting to be effective it also provides conditions where your dog will still bark in situations of genuine alarm. But recreational barking will very soon be a thing of the past.
There are a few other things to bear in mind when using a bark collar.
The first one is that a dog bark collar will not truly bark train your dog, what it does is to quiet him or her while they have the collar on. This will to all intents solve your problem, but you may wish to consider properly bark training your dog later on.
Second and very important, your dog should not wear his dog bark collar for more than 10 out of any 24 hours. Mainly because it may irritate the sensitive skin on the neck. This has nothng to do with the electricity but simply that in order to work the sensor points on the collar must be in contact with his skin, therefore over an extended time it would rub and cause soreness.
From experience there is only one dog bark collar that we would recommend and that is the TriTronics Bark Limiter, it fills all the requirements of adjustability of shock, speed of learning proven over many thousands of happy owners and dogs.
