Most joint supplements can be given to the dog, but not the bute–that will kill him, so please don’t do that.

The joint supplement should have a dosing chart on the package or online. Springtime Feeds and Cosequin both have doggie doses on the packaging. It comes to about a pinch of those. Other brands that have more filler may need a different amount.

HOW TO GET SUPER HEALTHY by DRAWING A REAL VITAMIN

The human race walks a common road but once in awhile there is a revelation so profound that it changes the journey and all observations.

It is then not possible to return unaffected and compliant with old beliefs, but begin to embrace a vision of wholeness and balance in all of Nature’s cycles. It is a return to the bounty of what Nature has provided immemorially for total health; thereby, redressing our shopping habits,

dinner tables and dietary supplements.

This exercise is guaranteed to make you never look at a vegetable or fruit in the same way again. Nature’s plant foods are intrinsic to our body’s structure and function. As importantly, when we choose our supplements, it is Nature’s whole plants that best meet the needs of the internal pharmacist inside us.

A couple years ago I was walking in similar shoes as most people believing several commonalities. Clearly, there is a direct link between

the food we eat and the structure and function of our cells.

Clearly, it is wise to eat several servings of fruits and vegetables daily highly recommended by many organizations, but often not substantially followed. Commonly, we understand that modern agricultural and food manufacturing processes have depleted and denutriented our natural plants of many of the essential elements

Subsequently, we are informed to do the next best thing …SUPPLEMENT…SUPPLEMENT… SUPPLEMENT

Now there are whole volumes that deal with vitamins, their role in health, best sources and more. But without a lot of training, most of us go to a store and decide to buy but based on what criteria. And on store shelves we are accosted by every kind of fancy labeling, claims, pills, capsules, powders, potions …and for some of us, the cheaper the better buy, right?

And once in awhile there appears a new buzzword of something vital for your body, accredited by a doctor or two, and so we have to purchase that, too. Often, to make sure we were getting a full spectrum of essential nutrients, we end up swallowing a handful of pills. Sound familiar? The latest advertising images of various vitamins are shown as brightly colored blocks with human bodies jostling each other to try and rank importance. What insulting balderdash, in my opinion.

But how much do we truly understand what constitutes a vitamin ?

Here‘s an interesting exercise…

Can you draw the elements of a vitamin (in the same way that you can draw the descriptive details of a cat, a dog, an apple or any other basic concrete object)

I’ve asked this question many times and am not surprised by the responses. In truth, a couple years ago, I would have responded in like fashion with a simple sketch of a pill or capsule form speckled with dots to show different vitamins.

A vitamin is not a dot, or speckle, a pill, a habit or a label.

A vitamin cannot be manufactured by the body and must be obtained from our diet (or supplements). A vitamin is a biochemical catalyst for growth, maintenance and reproduction of all cells in the body. It is an integral part of hormones, genes, amino acids, minerals, enzymes and immune components.

We need vitamins and minerals to help fill in the gaps in our modern food supply to benefit from total nutrition and who doesn’t want that. Your choice of dietary supplement is one of the most important choices you can make for long term health for you and your family. The question is which kind of supplement? We better get the right source and validation.

Undoubtedly, the most important drawing you’ll ever do is to see the real components of a vitamin. So take a few minutes now and draw what you understand to be a vitamin. Don’t worry about different kinds (B, C, D, A, etc.) because they all have three common features.

Don’t read ahead until you have actually drawn something because you’ll be amazed at the picture of what constitutes a vitamin. It is the revelation that transfigured my perception of what Nature’s provision is all about.

So what are the features of a vitamin?

A vitamin is an organic compound composed of three elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

Different vitamins have different combinations of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, some more a complex than others.

A drawing of a vitamin is a series of Carbon atoms linked with Hydrogen atoms linked with Oxygen atoms…all interconnected. For example, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) shows a fixed matrix with 2 Carbon molecules,

7 Hydrogen molecules, and 6 Oxygen molecules

You can check out the actual configurations for different vitamins by google searching ‘vitamin structures.’ Some structures are impressively complex which further asks how best to replicate them or keep them as natural forms found in plants already.

Furthermore, an antioxidant is also a series of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen molecules…

A phytonutrient, or natural phytochemical, found in plants is a set of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen molecules…

An amino protein is a combination of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen with a Nitrogen element…

A fatty acid is a long chain combination of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

Our natural whole plants are also composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen molecules with the extra elements of minerals drawn from the soil. Make sure your mineral supplements also come from plants, not ground up rock or metals that can actually accumulate in the body’s tissues.

A natural question is to find out how many different configurations are found in plant foods. The answer is a second revelation. Fruits and vegetables contain hundreds of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, anti-oxidants, phytochemicals, enzymes, other co -factors and fiber. For example, if an apple is “labeled” correctly there would be over 600 nutritional elements that scientists can identify. Just imagine, if Mother Nature in the spirit of fair advantage, could also label the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, their lists would be very long and very impressive! A bottle of manufactured supplement pills with 20 or 30 elements could never compare with Mother Nature’s nutritional powerhouses.

This is such a simple revelation in a market of information overload. Dietary supplementation is huge garnering about 17 billion dollars a year. There are least 29,000 supplement products made by at least 500 manufacturers, many with ingredients from the same supplier (some of which are pharmaceutical subsidiaries selling chemically derived, isolated vitamins and minerals). Strangely enough, some forms of chronic diseases have not changed and even increased.

In my opinion, in the same way that refined foods are robbed of essential nutrients, so I believe “refined” or processed pill formulations also cause imbalances, especially if taken at high levels over a long time.

This personal revelation finally led to a crossroads…how to best supplement…increase our portions of whole foods, supplement with whole food extracts, or take manufactured pills with “fractions” of natural plants.

In making the decision, a few principles stand strong. First, the body functions properly with proper “fuel” (food) a synergy of at least 100 nutrients. Second, the body is designed to draw nutrients from a natural food supply all working synergistically. Third, be aware that our genetic paleolithic blueprint hasn’t changed and that for thousands of years “ethnobotany” was the basis for healing. Fourth, was the choice to focus preventatively on natural whole foods to treat any prevailing unhealthy condition, rather than on the disease itself hoping for a chemical cure.

I decided to put my faith and trust in omniscient Nature rather than sifting and sorting through a huge number of products made in laboratories on conveyor belts. I decided to align with the natural environment believing that the “whole food best treats the whole body”. I chose a whole food supplement that comes from the ocean because of its natural mineral formulation as well as many other vital ingredients, including the essential fatty acids. I can now drink all my essential nutrients as a delicious nectar.

Just try and reproduce a bottle of sea water in a laboratory. http://www.4healthlimu.com

Let me talk to you for a few minutes about something you will find very informative. I bet youget very frustrated every time you find dribbles of urine all over the house? Canine urinary incontinence can make any dog uncomfortable and unable to control the bladder.

There are so many reasons for urinary problems in dogs that most pet owners do not have a clue as to what may be the underlying cause. This is when there is no alternative, but to make a visit to the vet.

Usually when the problem has been diagnosed, and the cause has been discovered, there is still no simple solution in conventional veterinary medicine for this common problem. Sometimes if the canine urinary incontinence was caused by birth defect or tumor, the only solution to correct the problem may be surgery.

If the dog’s urinary incontinence was caused by old age, bacterial infection or bladder stones, the veterinarian will most likely prescribe medication. But the options in conventional treatment are limited and not very effective to say the least. The major drawback of giving your dog strong medications, are the potentially significant side effects that usually follow.

To promote optimal health and treat urinary incontinence, you have to give dogs plenty of fresh, filtered water to drink and a diet of raw and unprocessed foods. You may also want to consider a homeopathic supplement.

Studies have shown that some of the best options for treating urinary problems in dogs, without harmful side effects, are natural supplements. ADDRESSING all of the problem areas of your dog’s health may be the first step in curing urinary incontinence since they could be the cause of the incontinence.

Homeopathic remedies are very effective in treating canine urinary incontinence because of the natural tonics that have proven to be very effective in maintaining and strengthening the bladder and urinary tract.

You will want to look for a homeopathic remedy that contains uva ursi and cantharis. Uva ursi is a urinary tonic that is used to maintains normal PH levels of the urinary tract, while cantharis keeps a healthy urine flow and soothes the bladder.

The principle of “like treats like” is the reason homeopathy remedies are so effective. Studies have shown that a substance that is known to cause the symptoms in healthy dogs can heal the problem in a sick dog when given in small doses.

What should you do next? Once your dog’s incontinence has been diagnosed, you will want to use this information as a guide and find a homeopathic remedy to cure the illness. These natural treatments are not only effective at getting rid of the symptoms but also getting to the root of the problem to prevent future urinary incontinence.

you can get this liquid that you add to the foo , its called hiprite, i got it from jollyes but if you dont have a jollyes were you live then try the internet, be careful were you buy from, and maybe if she had a little extra muscle around the joints that might help or maybe an egg in her food twice a week. they are all worth a try. good luck with her, i own two st bernards so looking after their hips is very important. also, walking up and down stairs will make her hips worse so be aware of that and dont be letting her jump up so her weight is all on her back legs. xx

Pets are one of God’s greatest gifts to us. They are special in many ways. Pets can have therapeutic effect on people. They have become family members because of their loyalty and faithfulness to us. The best way to reward our pets is make sure that they are healthy. Knowing how to choose the right pet medicine is always as important as choosing the right medicine for your own health.

Pet lovers need to understand their pets better before they even take care of one. It’s not enough to own a cat, a dog or a bird without knowing well their needs. Once we own a pet or pets, we accept the responsibility to take really good care of them. We need to consider the fact that they are already part of the family and we would treat them with outmost care and love that they need.

Oftentimes are amazed with the heroic deeds that pets do to their owners and wonder how we can get the same qualities from out own pets at home. Well, some pets are originally born with talents and others were trained to do so. But like humans, pets have that instinct. They have the ability to respond to their owner in the same way they are treated. This is the reason why some pets are charming than others.

A few months ago, I had a pet name Princess and she is one adorable dog. We lost her because we failed to give her a shot of Parvo. She seems to be a healthy dog until she started not to eat and get weaker each day. It was too late to give her a shot as she had been vomiting with blood. Losing her was like losing a family member. It took us about a week to recover from her loss until my sister gave me another one of the same color and we call him Prince to remind us of our late Princess.

There are a lot pet medicines available in the market today. As early as possible we should give them the shots and proper medications recommended by veterinarians. A regular check up is needed to ensure that our pet is healthy. Physical assessment is not enough to determine their health status.

Some evident symptoms of pet diseases are loss of appetite, weigh loss or weight gain, vomiting, restlessness and less playful. When we notice any of these signs, we better bring our pets to vet as soon as possible. There are discount medicines over the counter or you may buy them over the internet if you have no time to shop around. The advantage to shop online besides freeing yourself from the hassle of finding the right store, you can compare prices and choose the brand you want in the internet. With that, you will be able to find cheap pet medicines.

We must beware of overpriced supplements that promise good health for our pets. Look for discounted pet medicines that have the same or even healthier effects on your pet. There are lots of pet stores that offer 50 to 70% discounts on pet medicines. A more practical way than spending so much for the pet medicines.

How healthy is your pet? This is a question that we would probably ask ourselves. We would better be alarmed now than wait for something to happen. Prevention is always better than cure. Though easier said than done, it is not yet too late to act. Choose the right pet medicine and you will be assured your pet stays with your for life.

Allergies in dogs seem to have become more and more common over the years. Whether this is just because we are getting better at diagnosing them is debatable, but certainly the pet food manufacturers have had an important role to play in dealing with this phenomenon. Although a food allergy is thought to be non curable, the good news is that with proper diagnosis and management it can be well controlled in virtually 100% of cases.

What is a food allergy?

A more appropriate term for a food allergy is an adverse food reaction. It is where ingestion of a certain ingredient in the diet causes itchiness anywhere on the body and recurring skin or ear infections with Malassezia yeast and bacteria. Food allergies can also cause digestive tract signs too, such as fecal mucus, blood in the stools and increased frequency of defecation. They have also been associated with increased flatulence.

The root cause of these adverse food reactions is unknown, but research points towards an increase in permeability of the gut wall, or a failure of the gut associated immune system. Though it has never been proven that certain breeds are affected worse than others, some breeds do seem to be over represented. The age of onset can range from a few months to 12 years old.

What are the ingredients that dogs are most commonly allergic to?

There are 7 ingredients that are frequently responsible for adverse food reactions:

1.	Beef
2.	Milk
3.	Eggs
4.	Chicken
5.	Soy
6.	Wheat
7.	Corn

Statistically, beef and soy are the biggest offenders. Many dogs will be allergic to more than one of these ingredients, and may also be allergic to things in their environment, such as pollen, certain grasses or fleas.

How can a food allergy be diagnosed?

If a dog has had general itchiness that does not lessen in the winter months, recurrent skin and ear infections or intermittent soft stools, it is worth investigating for a food allergy.

There are 3 recognised diagnostic methods:

1.	A blood test to measure antibodies to various ingredients.
2.	An intradermal skin test where allergens are injected at various points on the skin and the reaction is measured.
3.	An elimination diet.

The intradermal skin test is thought to be very inaccurate, and the jury is still out on the blood test. The elimination diet is seen as the most reliable, and the cheapest of the three options. It does however require a motivated and disciplined owner in order to achieve meaningful results.

Elimination Diet

There are three basic elimination diet choices:

1.	Home cooked food

This is not generally recommended as it is time consuming for the owner and can also provide an unnatural and nutritionally unbalanced diet. However, if the dog is incredibly fussy and the owner cannot bear to force it to eat a commercial diet, the best ingredients are one of either lamb, fish, duck or turkey, plus one of either rice or potatoes. The two ingredients selected (the former high in protein, the latter a carbohydrate source) should be ones that the dog has preferably never eaten before.

2.	A commercial, limited antigen diet

If one of these diets is to be recommended, suitable ingredients would be venison, rabbit or oatmeal. Remember, we are looking for ingredients that your dog has never eaten before, so cannot possibly already be allergic to.

3.	A commercial, hydrolysed protein hypoallergenic diet

These contain proteins that have been broken down to the extent that they are no longer capable of causing an allergic reaction. They are often referred to as prescription diets because they are usually purchased via a veterinarian, although they can be obtained over the counter without a prescription. They are significantly more expensive than limited antigen diets, so it is wiser to try a limited antigen diet first as if the elimination diet is successful, the dog will remain on that food for life.

The elimination diet must be given for a minimum of 6 weeks, and possibly up to 10, in order to observe the maximum response. Owners must not give their dog ANYTHING else during the trial period, meaning no titbits, treats or vitamin supplements. For example, many owners do not realize that rawhide chews are made from cow derivatives and that with beef being the most common culprit in allergies, these chews could be the root of the problem. During the trial period, nothing must enter the dogs mouth apart from the chosen diet and water.

If the symptoms in question are intense itchiness, many vets will prescribe antihistamines or steroids during the first few weeks of the trial in order to make the dog more comfortable. If the dog gets better as the trial goes on, and the initial drugs to provide temporary comfort have worn off, then it is suggestive of a food allergy. If this occurs, the dog is then challenged with its former diet to see if the symptoms return and therefore confirm the diagnosis. It usually takes between 3 and 7 days for the symptoms to return after initiating the challenge.

If there is a partial improvement in the dogs condition, it is likely that the dog indeed has a food allergy but also has other allergies at the same time. The dog will then be kept on the elimination diet while other potential allergies are investigated, such as flea bite sensitivity and atopy. These can be checked for via intradermal testing or blood tests.

If a food allergy is confirmed, the owner can either continue to feed the same food given during the elimination trial indefinitely, or can persevere with dietary trials by introducing the 7 most common allergic ingredients (see above) one by one until it is ascertained exactly what the dog is allergic to.

It is every pet owners dream to have a healthy pet. For that to be realizable, you should ensure that your pet’s diet is fully loaded with all vital nutrients to guarantee a good health. Calcium is one example of these essential nutrients that must be present in a good and well balanced dog diet. Most of us think of calcium in terms of strong bones and teeth, which is very true because calcium has to be present in your dog’s diet for it to develop strong and healthy bones and teeth.

So what difference does too little or too much calcium levels make in your dog’s diet make? Remember that too little level of calcium in your dog’s diet is the major cause of a condition called rickets in pets. Rickets is any pet owner’s nightmare, because it causes your pets bones to be soft and easily bendable under your dog’s weight. Who likes to see that happen to their dear furred friends? Put you hands up.

Contrary to the above condition, excessive levels of calcium in your pets diet could easily result to abnormalities of the bone. This has been witnessed in large dog breeds. Puppies of such breeds tend to develop low density large bones which lack strength due to the high presence of calcium.

Proper levels of calcium in a dog’s diet prevent such abnormalities from occurring. This is one of the many important reasons for selecting proper well balanced diets for your dog. Consult with a dog’s nutritional specialist
In order to properly establish the correct amount of calcium to be included in your pets diet.

Calcium is a very important mineral in your dog’s diet. Calcium belongs to the interdependent class of mineral nutrients that work together with other nutrients and vitamins.

Calcium works well with phosphorus. A proper balance of the two mineral nutrients, calcium together with phosphorus should be present in a proper ratio to guarantee a dog diet that will boost the potential merits for your pet friend. Animal nutrition studies have revealed that calcium mineral ratio parts of 2.0 and 1.0 coupled with 1.0 part phosphorus. When there is a wide variation in phosphorus and calcium ratios from this listed range, bone result will likely occur.

A dog diet composed of meats only will not yield the required amount of phosphorus and calcium necessary for proper formation of healthy and strong bones. That kind of diet could result to a ratio of about 18 parts phosphorus to 1.0 parts calcium. The main problem here occurs in absorption of these minerals into the pet’s body.

The absorption of calcium and phosphorus is influenced by the presence of Vitamin D. if a pet’s diet lacks the appropriate quantity of vitamin D, other mineral nutrients will not be of maximum benefit to the pet. Remember that too much of anything is poisonous and the same applies to vitamin D. try to maintain correct amounts of vitamin D in your dog’s diet. Purchasing your dog’s food supplies from a respectable dog food manufacturer is a good way to ensure that your pets diet is healthy.

When a dog is nursing or during pregnancy, high calcium levels in the dog’s diet is much recommended. Such periods require you to feed your dog on additional amounts of well balanced dog food. Supplements are not mandatory under such circumstances.

Eclampsia or milk fever in layman’s term cannot be prevented with calcium supplements. Milk fever is a metabolism condition that affects the mummy dog after her puppies’ birth and nursing has began. It does not result from nutrients deficiency.

Do not supplement your pets diet with calcium or any other nutrient without expert advice from your vet or animal nutrition specialist. A pet’s health can be severely affected when calcium is out of balance. Giving your dog a well balanced diet is important. Well respected dog food manufacturers always devote time and resources towards research on animal nutrition to make sure that they offer your dog good quality products. They do this by formulating dog food preparations that are well balanced and healthy.

We all know that being overweight is unhealthy and can cause real problems. We also know what to do about it and how to trim down and lose weight. Well, since our dogs are part of the family, they often end up carrying more weight than is healthy for them. There are many reasons or “excuses” for how we let our dogs get fat.

The most obvious issue is what and how much you feed your dog. We have been programmed to think that our dogs need to eat at least twice a day without fail, yet the truth is, a healthy dog can go without eating for a day or two, as long as there is water available. Now I’m not saying you should withhold food from your dog. The point is, your pooch can probably get along just fine with a little less chow. Treats are another way we contribute to our dogs diet. Dogs love treats and we love to give our dogs treats, however, just like for us, moderation is the key. Letting your dog clean your dinner plates every night or feeding him a steady diet of table scraps will quickly add pounds.

There are other things that will affect your dog’s weight. One of the most common issues for overweight dogs is lack of exercise. It is very easy to get in a rut when it comes to exercising your four-legged best friend. We have busy schedules and taking the dog out for a walk everyday, or going to the dog park every weekend can be pushed to the bottom of the priority list. You should do your dog and yourself a favor and get outside and play. You will both reap the benefits.

Something you might not realize is that spaying and neutering lowers a dogs metabolism. If you feed your spayed or neutered dog the same way you would feed an intact dog, he will start to gain weight. Your dog will require fewer calories in order to maintain a healthy weight. Also, keep in mind that as your dog ages, his metabolism slows as does his activity level. There are special dog food formulas for senior dogs. These foods are made specifically for your senior dogs nutritional needs.

If your dog is overweight, it is best to consult with your veterinarian to decide the best way to help your dog get back to a healthy weight. Your vet may want to test for hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid. This condition would require medication. If your dog is severely overweight, you will need to be very careful about an exercise program because the added pounds will put a strain on the dog’s joints. Your veterinarian will also be able to recommend the best diet, including nutritional supplements.

Keeping your furry friend at a healthy weight allow you to enjoy more quality years together. Your pooch will feel better, and if you follow your dog’s diet and exercise program, you’ll feel better too.
